Tom Sawyer and My New Wall

Is it okay for my blog to quote another blog?  Oh, what the heck!

The wonderful Sharon Cohoon, Southern California editor for Sunset Magazine (and the woman I’d like to be when I grow up) wrote about my new garden wall in her blog, Fresh Dirt.   I love what she wrote!

When you walk out onto Nan Sterman‘s back patio, you see this intriguing fountain wall ahead of you that invites you to come out and explore the garden.  It looks so right where it is I figured it must have popped into Nan’s mind as a fully-fledged idea.  Not exactly.  The truth is the San Diego garden writer/designer/lecturer got all the favorite men in her life involved in coming up with this perfect-for-her-garden design. Enamored with Emus

As much as I love our California native plants, I equally enamored by those from the world's other Mediterranean climate regions, especially plants from Australia. Australian plants are just... special! The colors, the textures are enchanting. They add so much to our modern, drought resilient, resource conserving, wildlife supporting gardens. The best known of the Australian natives are members of the Protea family - all sizeable evergreen shrubs and even a few small trees that include Grevillea, Banksia, Hakea, even Macadamia! Raise Your Vegetables in Bed

While you wait for your vegetable seeds to sprout, you have plenty of time to prepare your planting beds.  For vegetables, annual flowers, and herbs, I always advocate for growing them in raised beds rather than in the ground. In regions like Southern California and the southwest, soils have very little organic matter, water is limited, and summers are hot and dry. In our backyards, growing vegetables in the ground is a big challenge. Growing them in raised beds, on the other hand, allows us to create the ideal conditions meeting vegetable plants’ needs. Extra water is limited to just the soil in the bed – fertilizer too – so it’s not wasted on ornamental plants that are just as happy – or happier – growing dry. It’s Freezing Outside!

Look at these photos of my angel trumpet (Brugmansia). Two days ago, it was big and lush and bright green like the photo on the left.  Yesterday morning, the poor thing looked like the photo on the right - all pooped out. Today, it’s even more pooped out.  What’s happening? Blame the cold.While angel trumpets are subtropical plants, my garden’s temperatures dip well below freezing in January and February, despite being only a few miles from the beach. In the 32 years I’ve gardened here, I’ve learned which plants manage the cold and which get damaged by the cold, then pop right back in spring.  Fortunately, angel trumpet bounces back. But in the meantime, for a few months it looks really sad.Notice how the top-most leaves look the worst, while the lower leaves don’t look too bad?
